Why use a Yellow “I Need Space” dog bandana?
Dogs may need space for many different reasons. A dog wearing yellow may be anxious, nervous, overwhelmed, frightened, elderly, unwell, recovering from an injury, newly adopted, uncomfortable in certain situations, or simply not want to interact at that particular moment.
A dog does not have to be aggressive to need space.
A dog also does not necessarily have to look distressed for their need for space to be real.
The yellow bandana helps communicate this need before someone gets too close, giving people a clear visual reminder to pause, keep their distance and allow the dog and handler to move comfortably through their surroundings.

Our colour-coded communication system is designed to make a dog's needs more visible. While these colours are widely recognised and increasingly used around the world, they are not understood by everyone. We therefore recommend using the bandana together with responsible handling and awareness.
The clear “I NEED SPACE” wording on the bandana also helps communicate the message directly, even when someone is unfamiliar with the colour system.
What should you do when you see a Yellow “I Need Space” dog?
If you see a dog wearing a yellow “I Need Space” bandana or lead cover:
- Give the dog and handler extra space.
- Do not approach, touch or hug the dog without permission.
- Avoid allowing your dog to approach.
- Give the handler time and room to move away if needed.
A little extra distance can make a big difference to a dog who is communicating that they need space.
Comfortable to wear
Tie the bandana comfortably around your dog's neck and leave enough room to fit two fingers between the bandana and your dog's neck.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG UNATTENDED WHILST WEARING A DOGGY BANDANA.
On hot days, the bandana can be lightly wetted to help provide a cooling effect.
